Children's Author Melissa Williams Shares Writing Expertise

Visiting Author Interacts with Students

Melissa Williams, children's author of Iggy the Iguana series and the Turtle Town series, shared stories to inspire students in their creative writing endeavors. Through a PowerPoint presentation Miss Williams traced her writing adventures and journeys that included how her characters were developed, both in print and in illustrations. She started writing when she was eight and includes, within her books, some of her growing up stories in Houston with her pets.

Students were delighted to develop story ideas and learn about character development techniques during their time with the author. Our students were eager to engage in this process and shared their ideas eagerly. The author gave hands on insight into the writing and publishing process. Ms. Williams then signed books for the students who had purchased her books. You can find photos of Melissa and students on our website in the Gallery of photos. You'll see Iggy and other character stuffed animals that joined her for the author visit.

Besides being a children's author, Melissa is a publisher, public speaker, and President and co-founder of the Read3Zero Foundation.  This literacy foundation's mission is "built on the pillars of Literacy, Creativity and Learning that will work within the community to conquer childhood literacy by influencing the lives of children to learn outside the classroom."

Through the tagline, "Conquering illiteracy together...30 minutes at a time" READ3Zero wishes to encourage adults to read 30 minutes a day with a child to help conquer childhood illiteracy. The foundation provides creative outlets to read and write. Read3 Zero's goal is to inspire a great sense of learning and positive self-esteem for children. Branch School students greatly benefited from the visiting author's visit, prompting interest in both reading and writing.
