Art is an integral part of our STEAM curriculum at The Branch School. STEAM (previously STEM) focuses on science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math and these elements, including the addition of the arts, are core components of what we teach.

Throughout the Renaissance Art unit, Hightower West Wing students studied Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Located in the Louvre, the world’s largest art museum in Paris, France, da Vinci’s oil painting is known as the world’s most talked about piece of art.

The middle school students were given a printout of her face, neck and hands to create a modern Mona Lisa. They were instructed to draw a new identity and setting using colored pencils. Students designed a unique frame to complement their modern Mona Lisa. Lastly, the students gave Mona Lisa a voice by using ChatterPix Kids – an iPad application.
